Description |
Three photos of Mary Crane with her Great Pyrenese, taken from her Christmas cards. The first (CD2317) is dated 1977, the second (CD2318) is 1981 and the third (CD2319) is undated. Renee Dutton submitted the following information regarding Mary Crane: "Mrs. Francis V. Crane first lived with her husband, Francis Crane, in North Lovell, Maine on Kezar Lake's Upper Bay. Mary and her husband were responsible for introducing the breed of Great Pyrenese dogs to the United States. In 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Francis V. Crane imported several specimens to seriously launch the breed with the founding of the 'Basquarie Kennels' at Needham, Massachusetts. Without Mr. and Mrs. Crane and their interest in the breed, it is doubtful whether the great bloodlines could have survived. Mr. Crane died in 1968 and Mary Crane moved from North Lovell to Center Lovell. There she purchased a home on Route 5 from realtor William E. Severance. This was the former home of Ethel N. Warren. As next door neighbor for ten years of the widowed Mary Crane, Oliver and Renée Dutton and family became fondly acquainted with Mrs. Crane and her five Great Pyrenese dogs. Mary Allen Crane was the daughter of Governor of Massachusetts Frank G. Allen (1929-1931). She was privy to watching the Boston Red Sox games from the Governor's box. She remained a Red Sox fan for her whole life, later watching the games faithfully on television. Mary also had a passion for raising exotic orchids and had a large elaborate greenhouse attached to her home to care for them. Later, she added an apartment wing to her home to house a husband and wife as her caretakers. Mary led an interesting and fulfilled life before she passed away in her Center Lovell home in 1982."
