Married in 1893. Died as a result of an accidental gunshot wound while hunting on the shore of Kezar Lake. Described by Scott Pell as "a history-making publisher. He created The Black Cat, America's first nickel magazine of fiction. He instituted the novel idea of pay-rates based on merit, not on word-count. Many great authors got their start in his magazine including Jack London, Henry Miller, and Susan Glaspell. He was also instrumental in encouraging early science fiction authors." |
