Otis True in the marriage records. She was from Norway and they appear to have lived there, with one of his jobs being Justice of the Peace. (3) Intentions of Marriage to Mrs. Hannah E. Wood Apr 8, 1875. When he retired he made his home in Lovell with his son Daniel. (3) Married at Lovell Apr 14, 1875 by John F. Hobbs, JP Buried in Norway. Bought the American House on Nov. 3, 1874 from Moses K. Bemis and sold the hotel to Eben Nutter of Cape Elizabeth on Dec. 30, 1876. The following is a synopsis of Otis True's Lovell connection: "Otis True (1814-1901) first moved to Lovell in 1874 and quickly became a prominent citizen. He was born in Poland, ME, was widowed twice, and had owned several hotels in the area and a general store in Norway. In 1874 he purchased the American House in Lovell Village. Living a few houses down was the widow of Josiah Wood. Five months after purchasing the hotel, Otis married the widow, Hannah (Walker) Wood, and moved into her home which is now known as Millbank Manor. At the time of their marriage Otis was 60 years old and Hannah was 46 years old. Daniel, Otis's son from his second marriage, was 16 years old. He and his father opened D.W. True General Store next to their home. Otis died in Lovell Village after 26 years of marriage to Hannah. When Hannah died she left the home to her stepson, Daniel. Daniel had married his stepsister, Susie Wood in 1882. Susie later deserted her husband, running off with another man, just as her mother had run off with another man when she was married to Josiah. It is reported that Hannah took flight with their coachman. She came back to her husband and was taken in, although she was treated more like a servant than a wife." Reported in the Oxford County Advertiser, Dec. 8, 1899: "Otis True had his leg amputated above the knee, Sunday, and at this time he seems as comfortable as could be expected." Burial permit states the cause of death as old age. |
